VERY RARE PROOF 1876 $10

The mintage figure of 45 Proofs for this issue is higher than in other contemporary years due to the Mint’s belief that collectors attending the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia would purchase Proof coins. While this may have worked for smaller denominations, it was not successful strategy for higher denominations. With the total number of Proofs at around 16 to 18, it is probable that a portion of these were melted after they went unsold.

In my opinion, this coin faces up really well and to the naked eye, it looks like a PR64. A more careful examination shows some hairlines below medium russet toning. There is also a noticeable scratch in the left obverse field. Still, this is a very pleasing example of a legitimately rare issue.

Heritage 11/2024: 3873 was a PCGS/CAC PR62+ CAM that sold for $42,000 and it was considerably more liney than this coin.

This is the third Proof 1876 eagle that I have offered for sale in the last year, and all were in the PR62 to PR63 range.
