WITH PRESENTATION CASE This is easily the neatest item I purchased at the 2007 ANA show. It is an original 1865 Proof Set which is complete from Three Cent Nickel to Silver Dollar. It is accompanied by a very high quality contemporary case which I do not feel was produced by the Mint but by a Philadelphia area jeweler; it is very similar to the Union daguerreotype cases seen on Civil War era photos. The case, which is pictured below, is stamped “Oat September 8th 1865” on the top in gold. The inside of the case is lined in blue velvet and is accompanied by a note which reads as follows: “Presented to Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Oat at their silver wedding Sept. 8th 1865 by Mrs. Henry C. Howell.” ![]() ![]() There were a total of 500 examples of each of these denominations struck but the number of original Proof Sets that are still intact is probably no more than three or four, including a few that are impounded in museum collections. This set is unquestionably original as easily seen by the similarity of the coloration, not to mention the presentation box. From a historical and numismatic perspective, this is a very important year as well. In 1865, the No Motto coinage saw its final year of issuance and the new Three Cent Nickel denomination was introduced. The Civil War ended in 1865, giving this year considerable appeal to collectors with a historical bent. The coins in the set are as follows: | ||

1865 Three Cent Nickel NGC PR65 PCGS Pop: 49/13 NGC Pop: 59/15 Very attractive for the grade with rich natural wood grained russet hues on the obverse and the reverse. If this coin were dipped it would reveal strong cameo contrast and highly reflective surfaces but I like its originality. This is the key Three Cent Nickel in Proof and unspotted Gems are quite rare. As on all true Proofs there are three obverse die scratches from the border to the lettering at STA in STATES. |

1865 Three Cent Silver NGC PR67 PCGS Pop: 0/0 NGC Pop: 8/1 Superb deep toning can be seen on both sides with similar medium lilac centers framed by splashes of dramatic multi-colored iridescence on the obverse and reverse. The underlying surfaces appear to be just about perfect with considerable reflectiveness. This coin is probably too deeply toned to be designated as a Cameo but it shows nice contrast on the obverse. This is the finest Proof 1865 Three Cent Silver I have seen and it is a very rare issue in PR67. |

1865 Seated Half Dime NGC PR67 PCGS Pop: 0/0 NGC Pop: 6/1 This is probably the most deeply toned coin in the set but when it is placed into a light source, the surfaces glean with rich blue, green and burgundy shades. With the exception of a tiny Mint-made mark in the right obverse field, the surfaces are virtually perfect. It is hard to imagine that a finer Proof 1865 half dime exists. |

1865 Seated Dime NGC PR65 PCGS Pop: 12/3 NGC Pop: 18/8 The obverse and reverse are a dusky grey with strong underlying violet and sea-green hues. I personally think the obverse is better than the assigned grade while the reverse is a bit too mottled to justify a PR66 rating. There is a good deal of contrast on the obverse. |

1865 Seated Quarter NGC PR65 PCGS Pop: 5/13 NGC Pop: 7/13 I think NGC was a point conservative on this Gem example. It has fiery reddish-gold hues and a good deal of contrast as well as very clean, very reflective surfaces. The 1865 quarter is perhaps the most available coin in the set as far as the total numbers of Gem examples are known. That said, it isn’t often that you see one as choice and original as this. |

1865 Seated Half Dollar NGC PR65 PCGS Pop: 12/7 NGC Pop: 20/19 The obverse is just lovely with a lightly toned golden-russet center framed by deeper multi-hued colors; the reverse is a bit deeper but it does show a good deal of reflectiveness. There is very strong cameo contrast noted and if this coin were untoned it might even receive an Ultra Cameo designation. |

1865 Seated Dollar NGC PR66 PCGS Pop: 8/0 NGC Pop: 12/5 How often do you see a Proof Set where the most valuable coin is also the nicest? While not graded as high as the Three Cent Silver or the Half Dime, this coin is truly stunning with glorious deep green, gold, red and blue toning atop highly reflective surfaces. There is an absence of the usual hairlines and the level of eye appeal shown by this coin is really hard to describe without seeming too hype-y. Suffice to say, this is among the nicest Proof No Motto Seated Dollars I have seen and it is hard to imagine that more than a handful of Proof 1865’s are finer than this. |

In summary, this set consists of seven coins, all graded by NGC and in consecutively numbered holders. It also contains the presentation box described above.
I feel that this is a truly unique item that could not be replicated AT ANY PRICE. In today’s market, collectors are always looking for truly neat, one-of-a-kind items but very few are available. This would be an ideal set to salt away for a few years than to put into an auction. $75,000To view other coins in our inventory, please click here. To visit our website, please click here. |
