The Mystery of the Proof 1875 Gold Dollar
As I have mentioned before, certified population figures can be helpful but they can also be confusing. Take, for instance, the 1875 gold dollar in Proof. This is a coin with a reported original mintage of 20. But it has a combined PCGS/NGC population of 24 (twelve at each service). Something is obviously not right here. But, for once, the fault does not lie with the population reports.

Proof Gold Coins
We are now on raregoldcoins.com Blog #50 for the year and I’ve just realized that I’ve yet to write anything on Proof gold coinage. It seems to me that a quick overview and a few passing thoughts on the subject are well overdue.
Let me begin by saying that I personally love Proof gold, especially Liberty Head issues struck prior to 1900.

Proof Gold: An Overview Part One Gold Dollars–Three Dollar Gold Pieces
The first Proof gold coins were produced in the early 1820’s. Mintages remained extremely limited until the late 1850’s and, in most instances, never climbed above more than a few hundred pieces.
While out of the price range of most numismatists, Proof gold makes a very interesting area to collect. For all but a handful of individuals, collecting Proof gold by date is not realistic.
