What’s Hot/What’s Not: The Coin Market As of May 2009

It’s been a longstanding tradition of mine to write a What’s Hot/What’s Not blog a few times a year. The last time I did this was, I believe, around the beginning of 2009. A lot has changed since then and, as we head into the summer, I’d like to share my thoughts about the coin market in general and United States gold coins to be more specific.

The Proof 1878 Quarter Eagle

When viewing mintage figures, most numismatists exclaim that a coin is “rare” because only 10,000 or so were produced. Impaired Proof Gold

Impaired Proof gold. What is it and do collectors covet these coins? This article takes a quick look at an interesting, little-understood subject. Proof gold coins were struck in very small quantities for collectors. Mintages figures for most issues produced before 1900 are extremely low; in many cases less than 50 coins per year. The typical survival rate for a pre-1900 Proof gold coin is around 50% of the original mintage figure.

Proof Gold Coins

We are now on raregoldcoins.com Blog #50 for the year and I’ve just realized that I’ve yet to write anything on Proof gold coinage. It seems to me that a quick overview and a few passing thoughts on the subject are well overdue. Let me begin by saying that I personally love Proof gold, especially Liberty Head issues struck prior to 1900.
