The catalog description of the half eagle states"Received at the Dahlonega Mint in 1860, along with nine other specimens, in exchange for mined gold and scrap." Are we to assume that there are nine other similar 1860-D half eagles out there somewhere?

Hi Doug,

If the 1861-D gold dollar can do so welll, why can't the much rarer 1864-S half eagle or eagle do as well? It can take 3 or 4 times as long if not longer to find these two coins!

Doug,
I agree with your comments concerning the 1861D $1.00 but the problem is that a coin like that does not come up for sale in another environment except once in a blue moon. I actively looked for an accurately graded reasonably priced 61D $1.00 for quite a few years with no success. The exceptional strike, color, and overall appeal of the coin led me to conclude that when an exceptional coin like this comes on the market, bite the bullet and buy it. Incidently there were more than two phone/floor bidders at the 45K mark.
