1800 $5.00 PCGS AU55 CAC
BD-4, Rarity-4. Blunt 1 in date. Terminal reverse die state with cuds over NIT in UNITED and STA in STATES. As the very first half eagle struck in the 19th century, the 1800 has historic significance. It is numismatically desirable in any grade, as are all early half eagles, and it is seen less often than some of the other later dates in the Bust Right type. This sharply struck example shows light green gold color with some deeper reddish hues banded about the border. The strike is sharp with just a bit of weakness behind Liberty’s ear; this does not correspond to the reverse. The surfaces have a few minor ticks that do not detract and there are no adjustment marks on either side. If you having been searching for an affordable, meaningful early half eagle you might want to give this piece some serious consideration.
